Key points at a glance

01

In September 2026 the gold price fell by 8.5% according to the World Gold Council (WGC), while USD 10 billion flowed into gold ETFs. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

02

The WGC defines gold ETFs as regulated securities that hold real gold. The value of a single share depends on the gold price, not on the size of the inflows.

03

The total value of all gold ETFs is the quantity of gold multiplied by the gold price. That is why the quantity can grow while the total value falls.

04

According to a WGC model, rising yields on US Treasuries and a stronger dollar were among the main drivers of the decline. In the WGC's view, the unwinding of bets on the futures exchange likely contributed.

In September 2026 gold became cheaper, yet a lot of money still flowed into gold ETFs. According to the World Gold Council (WGC), the gold price fell by 8.5% over the month, while USD 10 billion went into these products. This is not a contradiction. According to the WGC, rising interest rates and a stronger dollar weighed on the price at the same time, and selling on the futures exchange (where contracts for later purchases and sales are traded) likely contributed. Data as of 30 September 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

In brief

Gold ETF

ETF stands for exchange-traded fund. The WGC counts among them regulated securities that hold gold physically, meaning real metal. The value of a single share depends on the gold price.

Gold ETC

According to Deutsche Börse, an ETC is not a fund but a debt security. With it, the issuer promises a payment linked to the gold price.

World Gold Council

The trade association of the gold industry. The figures on gold ETFs in this article come from it.

Fed and yield

The Fed is the US central bank. It sets the policy rate, its most important interest rate. The yield shows the return on a government bond as a percentage.

Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Funds traded in Switzerland also recorded inflows according to the WGC, but their gold holdings fell by 1 tonne. The WGC attributes this to currency-hedged products, which are designed to cushion exchange-rate fluctuations.

Why did the gold price fall despite the inflows?

Interest rates: gold pays no interest

On 16 September the Fed raised its policy rate, citing inflation that remained elevated. According to the WGC, the Fed signalled that further increases could follow. According to the WGC, this pushed up US Treasury yields and the dollar.

Gold itself pays no interest. Holding gold means giving up the income that a government bond, for example, provides. Specialists call this forgone income the opportunity cost. In its report "Gold ETF Flows: September 2026" of 7 October 2026, the WGC writes: "These developments increased the opportunity cost of holding gold and weighed on its price." This refers to the rate increase, the higher yields and the stronger dollar.

Dollar: gold is priced in US dollars

The gold price is quoted in US dollars. When the dollar strengthens, gold becomes more expensive for buyers paying in Swiss francs or euros, which can dampen demand. The WGC uses its own model to attribute price movements to individual causes. On that basis, higher yields and the stronger dollar were among the most important drivers in September.

Futures exchange: funds reduced their bets

On a futures exchange such as COMEX, contracts for a later purchase or sale are traded. These are known as futures. They can be used to bet on rising or falling prices. According to the WGC, funds and money managers significantly reduced their net bets on rising gold prices in September. Net means bets on rising prices minus bets on falling prices.

In its market commentary of 7 October 2026, the WGC concludes: "This futures liquidation likely contributed to September's price decline, highlighting the divergence between ETF and derivatives market flows." Derivatives are contracts such as futures. The word "likely" shows that the association, too, is making an assessment here rather than a measurement. This offers an explanation for the apparent contradiction: ETF buyers and futures traders are different groups, and in September, according to the WGC, they acted in opposite directions.

What does the price decline mean for gold ETFs?

A gold ETF holds a certain quantity of gold. Its total value is quantity multiplied by price. If the price falls by more than the quantity grows, the total value declines despite inflows. For individual investors, the price is what counts: the value of their shares mainly follows the gold price, even when a lot of new money comes in.

Numerical example (illustration)

A fictional gold ETF holds 1,000 ounces of gold. One ounce costs CHF 100, so the holding is worth CHF 100,000. The price then falls by 10% to CHF 90. At the same time new money flows in, and the fund buys another 20 ounces. It then holds 1,020 ounces at CHF 90 each, CHF 91,800 in total. The quantity has grown by 2%, the value has fallen by 8.2%. All figures are freely chosen and are not a forecast.

The actual figures for September 2026 show the same pattern, only on a larger scale.

What are the risks and limitations?

  • Price fluctuations: The gold price can move sharply within a few weeks, including downwards; losses are possible. Gold pays neither interest nor distributions, so any return comes only from the price. The article on diversification explains how risks can be spread across several investments.
  • Currency: Investors who think in Swiss francs also bear the risk of fluctuating exchange rates when the gold price is in US dollars, unless the product is currency-hedged.
  • Issuer of ETCs: With an ETC, the payment depends on whether the issuer is able to pay (issuer risk). According to an account by Deutsche Börse (as of 2019), most ETCs are collateralised, meaning backed by pledged assets, which reduces this risk. Depending on the collateralisation, losses up to a total loss are possible.
  • Product structure: Whether a product holds gold physically or is a promise to pay is stated in the product documents. The article on how to read a factsheet shows such information using an example.
  • Interpretation: The reasons for the decline are assessments by the WGC, partly based on a model. Movements occurring at the same time do not prove a cause.

What can be watched in the coming weeks?

The Fed's monetary policy committee next meets on 27 and 28 October 2026. New WGC figures on gold ETFs will show whether inflows and the price continue to diverge. US Treasury yields and the dollar, which the WGC counts among the drivers, can also be followed. How these figures will develop is open.

Conclusion

In September 2026 the quantity of gold in gold ETFs grew while the gold price fell. This is not a contradiction, because total value is quantity multiplied by price and ETF purchases make up only part of demand. According to the WGC, higher interest rates and a stronger dollar weighed on the price, and the unwinding of bets on the futures exchange likely contributed. Inflows describe what investors have done, not what the price will do.

Questions & Answers

Common questions around this topic, briefly answered.

What is a gold ETF, and what is a gold ETC?

The World Gold Council defines gold ETFs as regulated securities that hold gold physically, meaning real metal. According to Deutsche Börse, an ETC is not a fund but a debt security, i.e. a promise to pay by the issuer. If the issuer cannot pay, a loss may result; collateral can reduce this risk.

Why can the gold price fall even though money is flowing into gold ETFs?

ETF purchases are only part of the demand for gold. In September 2026, according to the WGC, funds on the futures exchange were at the same time reducing their bets on rising prices, which in the WGC's assessment likely contributed to the decline. According to the WGC, higher interest rates and a stronger dollar were among the main drivers.

Why do interest rates matter for the gold price?

Gold pays no interest. When rates rise, for example on government bonds, holding gold means giving up more income. The WGC refers to a higher opportunity cost of holding gold.

Do more inflows into gold ETFs mean the gold price will rise?

No. Inflows show what investors have bought, not how the price will move. In September 2026 the two even diverged, according to the WGC.

What are the risks of gold ETFs?

The gold price fluctuates, including downwards; losses are possible. Gold pays neither interest nor distributions. Because the price is quoted in US dollars, investors who think in Swiss francs are also exposed to the exchange rate unless the product is currency-hedged. ETCs add the risk that the issuer defaults. Depending on the collateralisation (whether or not the product is backed by pledged assets), this can extend to a total loss.
